How can I get a fire belly newt to eat?

Lissa Law asked:

My son has three fire belly newts. One is about 2 1/2 inches long and the other two are 1 3/4 inches. Up until yesterday they were in the same tank as a couple of fire belly toads. We had to remove then hence the toads were attacking them. Early yesterday the bigger newt ate a cricket but the other two still refuse to eat. I have been feeding them the newt sticks. Any suggestions?

“Newt sticks” are a poor food choice, regardless of what someone at a pet store may have told you. Most amphibians only recognize live, moving prey.
Tiny earthworms, crickets, and other small insects are a better choice.

There may be other problems here as well, depending on how you are keeping them. I recommend that you read a couple of books on basic amphibian care.
